has anyone imported a Euro spec'd car to the US?

Thinking about bringing my 91 300CE back to the states with me when I'm done over here in Italy. Done a lot of online searching, but as you can imagine, a lot of the verbage is mumbo-jumbo.

Has anyone actually done this and knwo what must be done, typical costs? I will be shipping via Military transfer.

Any insight?

Years ago I imported Brit cars on a regular basis..
There used to be an exclusion to exempt DOT and EPA for cars over twenty five years old.
Newer cars require a bond to be posted to guarantee "Federalization", which means to bring to EPA and DOT spec..
Can be very expensive.

thats what I've found too, the 25 year clause, but being this car will only be 20 years old, well. Looks like it meets all the safetry requirements but need to research the emission requirements.

Research I've found say's I have to have a letter from manufactor saying a 91 MB Euro spec'd car meets the same specs as a 91 US spec'd car. Dealer letters are not acceptable, must come from MB itself. Might look into that.

I really love riving this car witht he 5 speed, so might look into it further.

PAID $11,120 FOR MY 96 w124 E36 cabriolet from Germany to Washington State in 2007 not counting transport, these were just fees paid to DOT,Customs. California should be another $9,000.00 as I was in the middle of moving from Cali to Wa at the time. Live out in the sticks where there is no emission testing. I really wanted the BAR sticker from California but was not worth an ESTIMATED 9k more so I just registered in WA.

Through the military should be less $$$ I would suspect. Right now 300CE are fairly cheap unless you have a mint condition low mileage car better off to sell there and buy another here.

I paid $19k us for the car in Germany, air fare, shipping, dot, customs, taxes = $36k us lot better cars can be had for that here won't do it again

I'll probably ditch the idea, just figured I would try to see what I can do, already have 5 cars stateside, so won't buy another when I get home, but since this is paid for and if I could get it in the states for 500-1000 for duties etc... I would.

But honestly, I really don't need another car.
