Major problem please help

Transmission Question Please help guy's!

I rebuilt the transmission on my 1987 E260 (722.4) and have since re-installed it and it smokes real BAD. It's white smoke and for sure tranny fluid. It did this same thing just before I burnt the original transmission up.

What would cause it to be burning transmission fluid?
How can I fix it?

Thank you much,
Tony M

You are sucking tranny fluid via the vacuum modulator port into the intake manifold. Not sure what the fix is, but that's where it is coming from. So start with the vacuum modulator.

also, if fluid level is too high, it will drain out on the exhaust causing white smoke

Any other ideas?

It did this before and burned up the entire tranny. No other idea's as too why guy's? I can't drive it because it will for sure burn-up again. Are there sensors involved that may be causing it?

Thanks a million,
Tony

We already told you the problem...It burned up the tranny because you obviously didn't check the fluid levels and allowed it to run dry.

Check that the vac mod is correctly adjusted. Check the fluid level (car must be RUNNING).
Check for leaks. That is all it can be.

I can't get a new vacuum modulator here until the end of next week. Is it ok to plug the vac-line and drive it easy locally?

Thanks for your help!

You can disconnect it, yes. See if it stops smoking after that. That would be the foolproof way to tell if the modulator is toast. Be aware though it may cause delayed shifting. Should cause no harm, just drive it easy.
