Question Steering box torque adjustment

I want to tighten up the play on my steering box a little bit. I checked the MB procedure that shows how to loosen the jamb nut and then adjust the allen keyed bolt (which, counter intuitively, must be be turned counter-clockwise to tighten things) to set the torque. But it also references some rather byzantine "special tools" that must be used on gasoline cars. Looking at the steering box, it looks like access to it is very restricted, hence, I'm sure, the special tools. Does anyone have an alternate technique to do this? Can you some how get at the adjustment nuts with regular tools?

Thanks,

- FD
