1987 300e 300k+ brake light dash indicator

background, I'm an electrician by trade and I've worked on cars in my spare time, mostly Mopar 65-92.

My uncle who is broke has to bring his 300e in for servicing. The dash light for the brake has been coming on. He says he needs pads and rotors because this light is starting to come on. I've ridden in this car as a passenger for almost 20 years so I know most of the noises. And I haven't heard a squeak or a squeal yet. I have in the past but this is not of of those times.

"For me" when a warning light comes on for the brake system. It means there isn't isn't enough "pressure" somewhere in the system. This would be due to fluid loss, a vacuum problem, power booster/master cylinder issue. I can't imagine that back in 1987 such a sensor could possibly exist. But I've been wrong. So I'm assuming that because this thing is in such of a need of a tune up that when he is slowing down for red lights and such and the light come on I'm thinking its vacuum related.

Any ideas on the matter? thanks
