E36 AMG cam timing

E36 AMG cam timing
Hi All,
I run a 1996 W124 E36 AMG estate.
I need some information concerning cam timing.
My engine timing is with no1 at TDC as per tdc mark on the crank, both cam dowel holes aligning correctly with the head, giving the inlet cam full retardation.
My exhaust sprocket has a dowel hole marked "U"
The current set up does not use this dowel hole.
I am not sure whether the current timing set up is the original from the factory as I believe this might be the second head gasket change.
Should my engine use the "U" dowel hole, therefore how do I set the timing?
