I'd keep rolling in dad's car and look at a Cabriolet. Well, actually, with your budget, I'd keep rollin in dad's car, and keep that money in hand.

$6K will get you a fairly clapped out 500E...
Mint as you "assumed" with 150K miles would be about double that.
Mint low mileage examples, even in this economy can range from high teens to high twenties+ depending on how motivated the seller is.

Nothing more expensive then a "cheap" Mercedes and that applies even more to a 500E

Listen to your Dad as he knows much more then you !
Keep driving what you have until you can afford to buy the best example "on your own" because in the long run it will cost you much less then a mediocre example.
All part of "growing up"

+1 - I'm looking to spend about what you are but you have to be realistic. for 3-6k range you get what you pay for.

All the ones i've seen in that range have been in various states of mechanical and cosmetic repair, and usually tipping the scales north of the 200k miles side.

That isn't to say you couldn't get one for that, start driving it and begin fixing things as you enjoy it. Thats my plan anyway, atleast you have good taste best of luck to you.

A car with a salvage title and enumerated problems is far from mint.

No such thing as "lower" end of mint...

"Mint" refers to a vehicle that would be a 90+ point car in concours judging...

You have a great deal to learn before you're able to categorize a vehicle's condition

right now your dad pays for maintenance and all that, how are you going to afford this on your own, with a 500 as a daily? not to mention insurance, gas, etc. unless you're still going to be getting handouts, i don't think this is the right time for you to buy this type of car.

personally, based on your previous posts and ideas, i would look at getting a different type of car. my preference is a 1999-2002 infiniti G20t. Get a 5-speed, comes with stock LSD, and it's luxurious enough for a teenager such as yourself. for $6500 you can get one in great shape with under 100k miles, and have more than enough left over to lower it, rims, etc. etc. plus they are super-easy to turbo. they get 30 miles a gallon, and with the stick, you can really push them hard (7k red line). they are also very reliable (timing chain instead of belt, for example).
I'm basing this recommendation on what you have mentioned of your background over the last few months. i know you love the benz, but from your threads on lowering, performance upgrades, and all that, this is not the car for you at this age/point in your life/budget.

i have owned a g20, you should check out g20.net to see what options you could have with one of these cars. realistically, if you want to buy your own benz, you are going to have to look at 190E's if you want a car that you can afford to buy, maintain, and possibly modify, on your own dime.

just my 2 cents, good luck with your decision, though i'm quite certain that this story will not end with you behind the wheel of a 500.

this is an idea of the car you can buy and maintain on your own budget and income level http://www.google.ca/search?q=crap&i...ient=firefox-a

haha soryy, all seriousness though. The reason i posted that is just because if you bring in 400 a month doesnt mean you'll save that, you might save just over half with allowance coming in. Keep driving dads car, save for a few years not months and get a good car. Don't buy a super used old car that you cant afford to insure, buy gas for or get even close to maintaining in anyway. I love my car its at 39,000 miles but i've put wayy more than enough money into it to keep it mint and only because i'm able to. If you have 6g's then budget for a 4g car on steady income. low to no income spending all your money on a car with 250miles on it is just asking for trouble. By the time you saved all that you'll probably have grown out of benz's and onto some other thing. Always keep in mind the cheapest car is the one you own(unless its a mercedes)

also, dont even think about buying a weekend car until you can afford to buy your own gas, just kinda common sense.

it's called responsibility. your father is already being nice enough to cover all your car expenses, now you want to get a second 'weekend' car... and get him to pay for most of those expenses too? don't be a freeloader. like everyone else said, drive your dad's current car until you save up for something of your own. that will probably be in a few years when you are in/done with college. your first car is basically the same as my 'dream car' growing up, that i had to save up 2 years to buy. you are more fortunate than you think.
i also understand that you are still very young so you won't get what a lot of people are trying to say, but you're also not as immature as some of the other kids your age i have met, so that's a good thing.

also, from all you have posted about your dad so far he seems like a good guy - you should get him to sign up here, since he has a benz...

If you really love cars, and put a high value on a unique car go for the 500E or a 1990-2 911. If you just like cars get something more practical. Repairs and maintenance costs for a 500E that does not require a lot of work going in will probably be less than a 911 and probably won't be much different than a 400E or even an out of warranty high performance Japanese car.

Is it realistic that your first car as a teenager cost over $100,000 in today's dollars when it was new? it took a big wallet to own and maintain one when it was brand new, let alone almost 20 years later after it has been driven for 150,000 miles by God knows who in who knows what manner.
be realistic. i am over twice your age and have a full time job, and it can still get tough to pay for fuel, let alone repairs, maintenance, and insurance, on my car, which ain't no 500. even if your dad is helping you out, is that fair to ask him to shoulder that burden for you, if you did manage to get a 500? probably not.
you have many years to buy a benz, the sensible thing to do is buy a smaller, cheaper, more reliable car now, if you really do want your own car. they're also easier to work on, you get to ease in to how to work on cars, parts are cheap, and they're easier to modify, if you so desire.
anyway, i'm not sure why i'm investing so much time in this thread, i'm going to bow out and leave you to your own devices. good luck my man.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say do it !

The only way to learn is the school of hard knocks....God knows in the 47 yrs I've been around its how I did it.

My 1st car was a Porsche 924 Turbo.

Not the friendliest car to own, but I still had a blast with it. It broke down so often I was forced to learn how to wrench my own stuff.

Get it and report back Zach.

And I definately don't plan on getting one with 250k miles, more like 150-175k, and maybe 200k miles AT THE MOST. Also i would have a mechanic come check it out before I would buy it.

I don't pay for my own gas by the way, so i dont see why it would matter if i can or can't afford it.
Gosh, to be honest a 200k+ mile car will prolly be better for anyone in your situation; having most everything fixed on it to be running at that mileage....a car b/t 150-175K miles is more likely a money pit (generalizing it here)....or will be sooner than later.

The 500E's gas tank is 24 gallons...about 300-350 miles you can get out of it. Your Dad will pay for your gas for how long at 80 bucks a fill up? I'm avaliable for adoption btw.
