Need Advice - Possible New 300te Owner

Hi,
I have NEVER owned a Mercedes. I used to rock Hondas but have been bitten by the German Engineering bug. I have been driving MK1 VWs for about 3 years and now want a more "luxury" vehicle. I found a 91 300te for sale locally but know nothing about repairing them or cost of them. The ad for the car states "91 mercedes te300 wagon 6 cylinder 179,000 miles with 3rd seat! so can fit 7 people!!! this is a CLASSIC car with lots of CLASS! new tires in good condition but, not running!" I contacted the owner and he thinks its a timing belt issue. The car is 4 matic also. He is willing to take $500 cash for the car. Im worried about the cost to repair the vehicle to get it in running order since it may need a trans and motor.

Anyone have any solid advice for me? Should I pass and keep looking?

I say pass, for the 4 or 5 grand you will probably have to put into it, you can get a pretty nice, newer w124 with the m104 engine. = more hp. Go for the 94 or 95, has the newer hood, newer engine. Are you stuck on the wagon? They don't usually have the leather door panels and seats. It's the mb tex. If you look for the newer 94, or 95, try and get one that already has had the wiring harness and throttle actuator replaced.

Personally, I'd buy it for parts. Especially if you buy the pre-facelift version. Which also came with an M104. If you don't want to race the car or do something stupid to it, it'll last forever.

500$ for an entire car isn't bad at all. Just my 2 cents!

I shopped for my W124 wagon for several months before buying. Based on nothing more than what you have listed, I would pass.

I've seen these wagons come to life, but not without significant time or expense...usually to the tune of $3K+

What kind of Honda could you get for $500?

The idea was to find a cheap wagon to temporarily haul the pets around in and still have room in the car. We dont need a fast car, just a safe one. These pets are like my wifes kids . Once she finds the 03/04 Jetta Wagon she wants for her daily and pet carrier car, this one will become mine. We are replacing 2 92 Honda Accord Wagons that are currently modded but rotting away.

Im looking at 91 or older so I can register it historic to avoid Emissions and State Inspections. The other issue is that we dont have a lot of money. I just started a small automotive upholstery business 2 years ago and it hasnt really taken off yet. Im still trying to get my name out there. All my funds are currently tied up in business. Wife works part-time so she isnt making a hell of a lot of money either. It almost sounds like I should just pass on this and hold out until next year. Maybe business will be better and I will have a few Gs to spend on a good one.
