91' 300E 4Matic
Question 4Matic W124

Hello,

I've just bought a '91 300E 4Matic with true 24000 kms (~39000 mi) on the clock, it has been (warm) garaged since 1997 when the first owner died and his wife didn't want to use it. I stumbled over it by accident while not shopping for a new car but just had to buy it It is in better than mint condition except for the wheels of course, anyone interested in a set of egg-shaped Contis...

I have no previous experience from the 4Matics and skimming through the forums I've seen some loose comments about "the problems" with early 4Matics in the W124 series but no details and I don't sense first hand experience either.

So my question to you guys and dolls are: Have anyone experienced any problems with the 4Matic equipment first och second hand? Is there something special to look out for? Some extra service/maintenance action to be taken?

Regards,

/mats

early 4matic problem

Early 4-matic option was installed by Porsche under contract with Mercedes in a plant in Scandinavia. Unfortunately, cars approaching 100k miles develop problems with the transfer case. All MB dealers are aware of this expensive repair. During the early '90's MB began manufacture of their own 4-matic option which they have greatly improved. P.
