'88 260E rear windshield weatherstrip loose **SOLVED**
'88 260E with 332,000 miles. Plan on keeping it until they stop making replacement parts for these W124s.
The 1.5 inch weatherstrip just under the rear window that seals to the trunk lid when it shuts is coming loose (first pic). I've determined that there are (were) a set of clips attached to the body panel just under the rear window by rivets. These rivets are now beginning to shear off (second pic). The clip stays attached to the weatherstrip but is no longer holding the strip to the body panel. When I open the trunk the strip pulls away from the body work and I have to manually position it in order to close the trunk and maintain the seal. I've shown where the clip should be positioned and riveted to the body panel (third pic) and then flipped the clip over and placed it beside the sheared rivet (fourth pic).
I've been told that these clips can be re-riveted onto the body panel. My question is what do I need to disassemble/remove in order to get to the back of the panel that the clips are riveted to? I cannot see any obvious method to get behind that body panel just below the rear window so I can pop-rivet the clips back on.
Anyone got an answer for this? All replies appreciated. I sure would like to figure out how to do this myself and save my car maintenance budget for more critical items.
**UPDATE** Didn't think pop rivets would be strong enough but even the local dealer guy told me they would work fine - put them in and everything is all good now.
Thanks,
Rick in Raleigh
