Grill removal/disassembly
Thanks.
Try the second first it may work.
open the hood, detach the opener from the cable assembly, remove the center screw from the bottom of the grill, remove the 4 clips (2 each side)which hold the plastic insert in the chrome frame. Then carefully bend the lower part of the chrome frame downwards and pull the plastic grill insert out. Then slide out the defective chrome part and replace them and put the plastic back in place. The other way is to take out the whole grill by removing 4 or 6 screws on the top of the grill, hidden behind the insulation in the hood front, a little hard to get to, but then the grill come out and then remove the clips and so on
I have a 1990 300E and replaced the original insert with a 600S style (Black plastic with 7 silver strips) from Autorice.com last June. In addition to the bottom screw and clips mentioned, the grill badge is held on by a nut that also went through the plastic insert on my 1990. You cannot just pull the insert out without removing this nut. I found it best to remove the 6 screws holding the grill in place and remove the entire grill. This will allow you to thoroughly clean everything and perhaps put a coat of wax on the painted finish under the grill as well as inside the grill. You can also replace the badge with a new one if it shows wear. They are only a few dollars. The 600S type insert does look great. Please contact me if you have any other questions.
