Can anyone tell what this light bulb behind the dash is for?
I took the instrument cluster out on my '95 E320 to install chrome rings and when I went to put it back in the car I found this one extra bulb that doesn't fit anywhere on the back of the cluster. It's much bigger than all the others. Anybody know what it's for?

Looka lot like the one I found but it was the warning light (last socket on far right) for problems in the headlight/interior light circuit. Had been deliberately left out as it was receiving a "low voltage" signal and therefore illuminated all the time.
Are you positive it doesn;t fit into the bottom row of indication lights ?

Positive. Look at the scale next to the ignition switch. The sockets in the cluster are no bigger than a pencil eraser, this one is probably over 1/2 inch diameter.

Run a check of illuminated points by turning headlight switch on.
Check areas like "headlight surround panel. I haven't pulled that area off myself but that's a fair size panel that is illuminated from behind so that the images all show up.
Is there much cable attached - if not I would suggest it's in that general vicinty. Is there an interior footwell light in your model perhaps that shines down.
Try to work out when it illuminates - ie when getting in, when ignition is on ? etc
That should help boil it down
