Reseting the Outside thermometer?

Does anyone know how to reset the thermometer? The one that displays the temperature in the guage cluster, just below the speedometer? Whenever I turn my car on, the display is either blank, or says +135. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Mercedes-Benz 300D TURBO 1987
Ambient temperature display/sender

The sending unit has sustained a bump. Any time some car even gently taps your bumper, there is a good chance that the electronic sending unit has sustained a wound. It can only resist the shock so many times before it begins sending erroneous temperatures to the dash display. Mercedes mounts it behind the bumper near the license plate where it has little protection. A new sender can be ordered discounted from Rusty at 800-741-5252. To acces it remove the front left wheel and the front wheel well plastic. It is not necessary to rewire the entire length, but only to splice the new wire to the old. P.

Is the sending unit the little piece at the end of the wire....kinda just a metal rod? Is it actually behind the bumper bc on my car I believe it is just below the licene plate and fits into a little cutout in the bumper.
