valve noise come and go

valve noise come and go
valves are noise when engine is hot.
Help... Does anyone experienced this problem, a knocking sound on the valve assy when it was driven for about 30 mins. When the engine cools down and then restarted it seems to be quite.
Thanks
Elie

Once you pass the 45 to 65 mph range it will start to get noisy then even at idle it will be noisy. I'll wait till the engine cools then it seems to go away. There is engine hesitation.
Back ground on this car, the car was not used for a long time and the engine oil was dirty. I flushed it twice. Then change oil. I used castrol 40. I also replaced spark plugs.
The engine has power it can hit 65 mph easily.
Thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with Castrol 40. Is that a 40W oil? I hope not. It does seem you have sticky lifters from non-use. You've flushed it twice, which is the right thing to do. I would use 5W30 oil and keep exercising the car until the ticking goes away.
Are you sure it's the lifters and not something else?

08 Lexus GS350 AWD. 08 Lexus RX350 AWD - wife's. 94 MBZ E320 - still have it.
Sticky lifters?
Kestas, I don't believe 86 300E has hydraulic lifters. I had an '86 long time agi and I remember replacing the valve stem seals and then adjusting the lifters. It was just a regulur adjuster-and-nut things.
I think MBZ started using hydraulic compensators on 3.2 DOHC engines, but I may be wrong on that one.
Arnie.
Anb BTW I can't think of anythung that would case that noise.

The W124 6 cyl. has always hydraulic valve lifters
There is a remote chance that the gaskets between the muffler manifold and the engine block are burnt. If so this also causes "ticking" noises, which come and go. Hard to test since they tent to burn on the lower side you cant see w/o holding a little mirror underneath the manifold. To swap those gaskets is quite a job for a DIY since the manifold has to come off from the catalytic converter onwards. The nuts tend to be burt in badly, and the bolts should also be replaced. Partswise no big deal but timewise.

solution FYI
The problem was solved it is an oil circulation issue. Unfortunately there is a pipe line inside the head the is moving back and forth or up and down. It supposed to be stationary.
Have it machine and it is fixed.
