Fuel gauge flutter....Normal??
I noticed tonight that when my needle was between 1/4 and R that at stops it would jump back and forth. Is this normal or is there a voltage regulator in that circuit that might be going bad? I know on older domestic cars that the guages stayed steady with the help of a regulator. After filling up it does not flutter. BTW car is a 92 W124.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Your symptoms sound similar to a problem common to Audi/VW cars.

Hopefully, it's as simple as this. Let us know. . .

Replace the fuel gauge sensor in the tank. It is behind the carpet lining in the trunck. Open the large hex nut and pull the sensor (6-7 inches long) and replace it with a new one (approx. $ 20). It should fix the needle to jump up and down.
I just checked another source concerning the flattering gauge. It can also be a cold solder joint at the back of the fuel indicator instrument itself.

Before changing the gauge, Try cleaning it first, use the lightest sandpaper, run it back and forth lightly on the long wires. Usually this helps. It did in my car.

It's a common problem...try fuel cleaner first.
The W124 sensor is a bit more in USA...try $84 wholesale but its easy to replace...just do it when the tank is near empty.
