I helped my friend clean his egr valve and tube because his Check engine light was on and idle was rough. The onboard code reader gave us a 5. After the tube and EGR valve was cleaned it still continued to have a rough idle. when I unpluged the rubber hose that goes to the top of the EGR valve it runs smooth as silk and drives great. What areas should we be looking at or is an EGR valve replacement still neccessary although it appears to be fine?

Follow the hose. It leads towards the front of the engine to whatever controls the EGR valve.
