I have a 1990 e300 lowered with h&r 1.5 springs, will 18x8.5/9.5 wheels be to wide?

Maximum fitted on any production model (and I am including Carlsson in that) was 18x9 front 18x10 rear. Offset on those wheels was 28 & 27.
Note though that this was with modified wheel arches !

I would suggest way too big on your application. 7.5/8.5 would be optimal and probably better in the 17inch size.

lots of cars
If you have rolled fenders you can run a rear 255/35/18 tire but make sure the rear offset is in the +40 to +43 range. I've tested a lot of offsets and was able to run 18x9 +35 on the rear. Most common wheel size on the w124 is 18x8 +40 with 225/40/18 tires. You can't go higher than +43 because it'll hit the strut.
