New to the club
I just picked up a gem of a car a 1987 300D Turbo with 160k on the clock. The interior is in great shape, she runs well and I am extremely satisfied with the car.
I did a oil change, trans flush, fuel filters, new belt (and tensioner, shock, pulley).
The most dramatic change in performance came after the fuel filters, the car was a turtle before that.
Its a old car so she's not perfect. The tack doesn't work and passenger side window is slow to move.
I'm going to try and get some more power out of her, I was thinking of going to a junk yard and buying a old intercooler. I was thinking of uping the boost a few lbs with a MBC. Has anyone done anything like this and what kind of results did you yield?
My other gripe has to be the stereo, its an 87 I shouldn't expect much. I'm thinking about upgrading the head unit and putting in new speakers. Can you recommend a factory looking unit (cd, mp3, xm, iPod integration). As far as speakers go I just want something louder, I can barely hear anything at highway speeds.
Finally I plan on sea foaming the engine. Yes I am aware if done wrong the engine can "run away" and self destruct, but I'm certain if I do it right I shouldn't have any issues.
Thanks

Welcome to MB World.
I replaced the standard headunit with an Alpine CDE 126BT which is a great unit.
The specs are great :
Built-in Parrot Bluetooth
50W x 4 Max Power
2 Pre-amp Outputs
Includes Separate Microphone
Blue or Red Selectable Illumination
Front USB Input
Front AUX Input
MP3/WMA/AAC Playback via CD or USB
The parrot bluetooth is fantastic rarely have any trouble with calls and the ipod cable it comes with I ran under the transmission **** and window switch panel to come out the back into the carpeted tray area. Good value for money at $160 on Amazon. Superseeded model so you can swing a bargain !!
I put 4 inch Soundstreams up front plug and play drop in's. Have had excellent results and even had a sound expert who was giving advice on the other mb forum say that they are a must keep, they are an excellent product. There are a variety of 5.25 inch rear speakers you can get for the parcel shelf (if thats where yours are). They can be expensive (ie Focals) but I am running Pioneer GSR143 whih do the job nicely.
Cheers
if you want a subdued factory looking head unit i would look at blaupunkt, nakamichi, and even kenwood, they offer some pretty clean designs, especially on older models
On Friday I went l.e.d crazy, I bought $200 worth of bulbs. Everything from side markers, to indicators, to brake lights lol. The car will look like a space ship!

For speakers, I think the Rainbow IQ line is the preferred drop in speaker replacement for the W124.
