My 300e temp gauge over 120c then back to 80c

Hi. I just bought a 1993 mercedes 300e in a city 60 miles from home. The seller said he changed the heat sensor and the temp gauge was working fine. I drove the car about 10-15 minutes in stop and go traffic and the temp stayed between 80-82. I then drove it 60 miles back home on the highway and temp gauge was fine and normal. I started it today and drove a couple miles and it shot passed the red. After 3-5 mins it dropped back down to 80 and stayed there as I drove back home. I opened the hood and it wasn't hot or smoking, light stream of white smoke coming out of tailpipe, also considering I'm in Ohio and it's 32 degrees F. Any ideas?

Hopefully they didn't sell you a car w/ a cracked head My opinion? At worst you may need a new radiator. Or just a thermostat. I would get it looked at by an indy mechanic that knows Mercedes

Thanks. I hope it's not cracked either. I drove about 26 miles today and the temp gauge stayed dead at 82. I will try the thermostat first and hopefully that will help. Then I will get the diagnostic when I get the paper if you know what I mean (high hourly rates). By the way, Do you know how to get the back seat headrest to go back down?

yessir, there is a button on your dash near the hazards that you press, and they will pop right down

it looks like a seat with the headrest in white

The rear head rests are manually pushed down and raised by a switch on the center console.

Thank you, Didn't know what that button was for. I'm still waiting for the owner's manual I ordered on ebay, but what about the button with the arrows going in a circle that light's up?

I would seriously be thinking about temp problems, these motors will blow head-gaskets with over heating,120 not good, 85 normal
