1986 Mercedes Benz 300E
Exclamation HELP!!!!!!!

I'm Louis Whitt. I live in a small town called Pulaski, TN. I need a lot of help from the Benz community. I had acquired a 1986 Mercedes Benz 300E for a steal of a deal. I need your help with parts. I want to make my car a custom AMG HAMMER that can be posted in Magazines, and forums like this. I know that if everyone here loves the Benz as much as I do, then you might be willing to help. The car is in decent shape as it is right now, but I want to make it much better. Engine- I want a M117 6.0 Liter quad cam. Transmission- 5 speed Manual. Suspension- Sport line AMG. AMG Body kit. Full Hammer Interior, and Wiring. AMG Wheels- Black center, and chrome lip. Want to Carbon Fiber Wrap the Wheels. Carbon Fiber Wrap the hood. Carbon Fiber Splitters. Black headlights, and smoked taillights. Custom spoiler, and custom yellow paint. Baer big brake kit. Custom exhaust. I need help in locating, and/or acquiring these parts. I hope you can see, and share my dream. If you can help in any way let me know. Thanks

I would like to see it but there are a few questions I have.

You want to black out the head lights (super sexy) but not the tail lights (also sexy)?

What kind of custom spoiler? I doubt that many here would find a ricer spoiler sexy on this car.

Do you have any sketches that you could show us?

Best of luck to you regardless of your decisions!

Carbon Fibre wrap the brakes ? Why ?
Put decent brakes on in first instance your going to need them.
Brembo's or something like that that have a sexy colored cover on them.
Take a good long look at the original Hammer.
It reeks and oozes power and strength. Follow that recipe and your good to go.
Modify that recipe and you could end up with an MB Ricer/Pimp My Ride.
I admire your courage to do all this, it is NOT going to be easy or cheap !

Red face Brakes?

I said I would like to wrap the wheels in Carbon Fiber. Not the brakes. I will work on the sketches, and post them when I have them. I like all cars, and I do want my style to show it. The spoiler I want is kind of like the one used for the Evo 2 Benz kit, but in my OPINION it's better. I do like bright colors, and style. I don't like seeing the Hammer in just black or silver. Iwant to put my own twist on it. As for the headlights and taillights. The only kits I found for the 300E for my "86" are the black housing hid headlight upgrade, and the smoked out led taillight upgrade. I think they would look quite nice with my vision of the car.

The Hood!

I want the hood to look like this when I'm done with it, but I can't just buy this style for my car so I have to make it with my original hood, sheet metal, and carbon fiber wrap.

For the amount of dough you will need to make this a reality...you could be driving a late model CLK63 Black series. You could prolly buy one of the original Hammers too for less; my bud sold his real deal 6 liter Hammer sedan for in the 40s last year....that's all it went for here in the USA. It was one of the original cars too, not a clone.

Finding some of those parts you want will be hard and take some time, and might not even be in this country....like the M117 quad cam 6 liter. Do you have any idea how much a motor like that costs used if you can even find one? Then it has to be shipped, and prolly re-built or at least freshened up.

Good luck with it man ! Sounds like a killer car in the works.

If it were me (and it's not) I would buy a good 500E and bodykit it.
Then start the custom mods. That way the electricals, engine, transmission, suspension etc don't need to be screwed with and you can spend your money on doing some affordable upgrades.
Have a search for details of "RBYCC" or "BAHNSTORMER" who spent a lot building impeccable "twin turbo" coupes and doing body mods properly.
These rocketships absolutely fly and with far less angst and dollars than what your planning.

No Sacrifice, No Victory!

The point of me building this car is the fact that I want it to be different. As for the motor, I know it will be hard to find, but I plan on rebuilding whatever one I find with all high performance after market parts anyway. I found an M117 on eBay for $2,500, but I know it's notexactly what I want. However, I may settle for it anyway, but the Transmission is going to be the hardest thing to find. I would like to update all the old wiring, and vacuum lines anyway just because of how old they are. If someone says the want to build the best 68 Camaro around. I don't tell them not to waist their time and money, because they could get a new one for about the same or cheaper. I say go for it, and let me see it when it's done.

Louis we are not canning your idea - it's your car.
But your starting with a proven chassis but one that was designed for a range of 6 cylinder motors.
Thelatter V8's were re-engineered to support larger motors and gearboxes.
The 400E/500E chassis was set-up to carry a V8 and were fitted with the extra width of the wheelbase, differential, tailshafts, suspension etc etc to cope with the size and weight as well as to have a suitable handling/steering to cope withat extra power.
Not too mention they were really nicely optioned internally.
By starting with a 400E or a 500E you have much of the componentry you will need to change/upgrade for your proposed transplant. For example the engine mounts will be in position to carry the much larger V8 as opposed to a straight 6 engine.
You have upgraded brakes, diff etc.
Fitting the huge M117 V8 will require a lot of re-engineering and time.
Have a search on benzworld for the photo documentation of a guy called "smautoworks" who transplanted an M119 into a 300CE coupe and see how much chopping and welding was required.

Question AMG Hammer

The 1986 AMG Hammer was the 1986 Mercedes Benz 300E implanted with the V8. Yes, The inline 6 Chassis can handle the V8 with the motor mount swap, and suspension upgrade. I have the Mercedes Owner's Bible, that gives the history of the Hammer, and if you look it up on the Web. Every where I have searched says the same thing. AMG started with a 1986 Mercedes Benz 300E as the base vehicle for The 1986 AMG Hammer. I never said the project at hand would be cheap, or easy. But, it can be done. I don't have an extra 500E just sitting around anyway, So, unless someone does, and wants to do a trade, then what you see is what you get.

As already mentioned even if this build had a remote possibility of occurring, why would you not start with a V8 chassis? You could buy a 400E for under $3K EASY. Look for the Benzworld thread to see how much effort it took to put a V8 in a coupe, and you are thinking of stuffing 12 cylinders in there? Yes AMG did it, but that's why they are AMG. And where are you going to find a manny tranny, diff, etc. to mate to it? I would buy a 500E for $10K, which will get you 90% of the way there in base performance, and then do whatever performance and visual 'upgrades' you want to.
So you have me down as a non-believer, BUT you should never listen to others when it comes to cars. if I did then i would be driving a W124 that looked like every other W124, and f**k that right.

I have only one question: Realistically, how much money do you plan on spending on this project? IF (big if) you could even find all the parts, just your kit, engine, interior, brakes, wheels, paint, and suspension would be in the $10K-$12K+ range easily. That's just parts, and not counting labor and fabrication for your drive train and any installation.
That's why I'm interesting in how much you plan to spend on this project.

I tried to resist but I gotta.....

You gonna spend thousands on buying an engine and then doing mods to make that car of yours accept that engine.

For those thousands you could buy you a classic 500E which already has the mods properly engineered, upgraded stopping power, transmission, differential etc etc etc.

Better still you can keep driving the 300E whilst your doing your changes or sell it and put the money into a upgrading/maintaining a true classic W124 that nearly every guy on MBWORLD or BENZWORLD drools about.

The 400E and 500E have a maximum desirability factor.
Have a look at this beautiful example of the 500E.

http://www.euroclassicmotors.com/gal.../500e1992.html

Now compare it to your 300E !
There is no comparison
This car is a classic, factory built by Porsche and reeks of power and class.
Sure you can body kit such a beast but you wouldn't have to because it tells the story just looking at it. You would be above the norm, a non-ricer, a classy powerful motor cars argueably one of the best ever made.

"...This is the legendary world wide proven W124 Chassis including safety, durable, reliable, stylish design and proven through the years drive train! But W124 500E/E500 is a little bit different!.. Back in 1984 the "Sport Sedan"era was born with BMW E28 M5... The answer on the competition Mercedes Benz made their first sport sedan build by AMG named "Hammer 6.0" back in 1988. But due to its galactic budget/cost never become popular car. In 1990 Mercedes-Benz did there second W124 but this time all new Program with Porsche collaboration helped to develop the super sedan. They re-design the chassis including wide body flaring all 4 fenders, brakes are upgrade with bigger rotors and 4 pistons calipers, reinforced chassis, stiffer suspension including springs and bilstein sport shocks, improved interior quality and seats. The engine on this car is the Legendary M119 Dohc V8 326hp with single Vanos on the intake. The result is 0-62mph for only 6.0 sec..."

But Zed I fear we fight a losing battle ......

Go at it and build the car you want. I like black and yellow cars and I'm curious how you will pull off your ricey Benz.

These cars tend to always look good when they go low!

Exclamation Saving this Car!

I don't need this car. I recently purchased a 2013 Dodge Dart. I'm not good at saving money, but I am good at spending it. I had a 1998 Chevy Malibu, that had thrown a rod, so I bought the Benz in a hurry for needing a car right then, plus I always wanted a Benz. So, when I talked the guy down from $1,000 to $500. I was astatic. So now I want to save the Benz I have, and not get the one I don't have. I will start with the easiest, and cheapest mods. I can, then go from there. I don't care how much it takes. I just want to run with it until I'm happy with it. It ain't gonna happen over night, and just in case anyone was wondering. I'm 34 years old, and not a teenager. Most of the mods I can do myself. The rest I will work on when I come to it. If I can't find everything I want, then I will settle with what I can. This car however is the car I plan on using. Yes, I do plan on upgrading the suspension with high performance to give it the lower stance, and sportier look.
