08 Lexus GS350 AWD. 08 Lexus RX350 AWD - wife's. 94 MBZ E320 - still have it.
There could be a hundred things. How do you define "knocking"? If you never adjusted the valve clerances it could be them. Fairly easy to adjust. The knocking sound is caused by normal wear of the camshaft and rockers. The later models had hydraulic lifters, no adjustment needed.

AS the previous poster said, many reasons. But this car has hydraulic lifters, no adjustment required. You experience the konockin gonly when the engine is cold, and than it goes away? Try 2-3 fill-ups with highest grade gasoline. It may be the cure. It can also be that one (or more) of the hydraulic lifters is worn out. It is not a threat to the engine, but an anoying noise.
