Don't waste your time with chips. On the older engines they're of little help. If you want more power, you'll want to modify the exhaust system; that's where the most power is lost. However, I personally don't condone doing things that would further harm the environment

Coming from a completely performance aspect, what type of modification do you think would give the greatest gains for the exhaust system aspect? Straight piping? Gut cats and remove resonators? I don't want to be abnoxiously loud at any point, but a gain in performance would be nice.

Removing the catalysts would be the biggest help. Also, if you have an EGR, remove the hose and plug it with a ball bearing. Some folks do that on the turbodiesels to get more power and better fuel economy.

Search for something called the Timevalve Y-Pipe in Mercedesshop.com's Hot-Rod forum.
I love Mustang Cobras and Vettes that make that V8 rumble down the road.. but I'd hate to see a W124 do the same... so I haven't done anything to the exhaust. I like the sophisticated growl from the motor

The best performance gain will not be from the engine but from the diff., if it's replaced with a 2.89 ratio one the car will be around a second or so faster to 60. The higher the ratio the faster the car, but in return is lower top speed and gas mileage.
