300CE 24V MANUAL
My First Mercedes 300ce 24v Manual

Hi Guys,

I've recently purchase a 1992 300ce 24v Manual LHD as I recently moved to Barcelona.

I'm looking to do all the necessary upgrades to make this into a great driving car. I've read many posts on Mercedes forums but lack of a garage at present is stopping progress...

I'm looking to upgrade as many parts and increase longevity of the existing cars problem areas, the EZL unit? think thats it.

I would like to know what Mercedes parts are possible as upgrades, Brakes, lightened flywheel, removal of Airbags and retro fitting the glovebox.

I will be rummaging through the forum over the next while any help greatly appreciated.

Kind regards JP

Welcome to MBWorld. Having a garage is a must if you plan on tackling on the maintenance yourself. Take a look through the w124 subforum for information and resources on your specific model

'90 300CE M103 Manual '93 Alfa 164 QV24 '05 Jaguar X350
It is nice to know that someone has a manual drive on the other side of the world. I have a 1990 C124 RHD with the M103 engine and a converted manual gearbox. The car drives like a dream - the manual transmission totally transformed the car. I have done very little upgrades, simply using the 24v front brakes that give better stopping power, and replacing the original differentials (ratio 3.07) with one from the TE model (ratio 3.46), and a stainless steel tail box - not the loud but quiet one. The car came with full Lorinser body kit, Lorinser D93 wheels and lowered shocks when I bought it 10 years ago, and since then I have rebuilt the engine and replaced almost all dated parts. I plan to keep everything as is and original as far as possible, as factory original and OEM parts are still abundantly available (thanks to the Internet and Mercedes' global market), but if you do other upgrades chances are those parts will run out of stock and it would be difficult to go back. Performance-wise, Turbo-charging the car is one possibility but I learned that the M103 is easier to modify due to more engine room than the 24V, and Turbotechnics and Mosselman Twin Turbo Kit for W124 are very rare finds these days. So the way to go is to keep this very rare marque a modern classic for people to admire, and to remind people of the reliability of German engineering from Mercedes' golden age. Perhaps an easy-to-do and very effective modification that would improve the acceleration is to replace the differential with a taller one (like I did), but the draw back is the car will compromise in top speed and the speedometer will become inaccurate. I think 300CE 24v has more power (40PS more) and will cruise better and quieter on higher speed and has decent performance compared to more modern breed, but it will never win over the more modern cars, Honda Civics included, as W124 is a very heavy car (weight to power ratio would be a huge disadvantage) and no matter how you look at it, the technology is some 25 years' old. However, I am sure that if well maintained, the W124 will outlast many other competitors of the same or modern era.
