Fan Pulley problem

I have a 91 300e, and when the car is at idle, it started to make a funny noise. When i opened the hood to figure out what was the problem, It turned out that the fan pulley was wobbling on its bearing and the fan blades where hitting other things, it would only happen for a couple seconds, and then stop. And it will only happen at idle.

Is the pulley just loose? Or does the bearing go bad?

Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!

Sometimes the bearings go bad and make sounds as you described. You'll need to remove the belt, fan, and clutch to replace the bearing bracket.

That would be the bearing going bad just like Jer said. It only happens at idle because as the fan and pulley spin faster the centrifugal force balances out the fan and pulley. If you don't fix it the fan will seize on you ruining your belt and causing your engine to stall at idle. The same thing happened to me but with the smog pump pulley bearing.

Thanks guys!!!!!

Took me only an hour and a half to replace with normal garage tools.

The old bearing was in such bad shape, some of the ***** were missing from inside!

Got the part for 133.11 and had to replace a bolt on the idler pulley for 1.75, so total cost for the job was 134.86. No telling what they would have charged if I had taken it to the dealer.
