2 Probs: Speedo and Ticking noise

My car is a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 230E.

First problem: Anyone know the cause of a hovering speedometer? Whenever speed increases or decreases (actually, wherever it is except 0 km/h) it hovers while it moves.

Second problem: The engine makes a ticking noise which fades in and fades out every now and then. It happens usually when you start the car (especially on a cold morning), but it happens other times as well. It happens when it idles, as well as when you're driving. With the windows up and mild traffic, doing about 60km/h, you can hear the ticking from inside. Someone mentioned a black spot/mark on the cylinder head, and that will need to be drilled out and yadadad ....anyone got any ideas about the speedo prob and this ticking noise? The exhaust system has been checked .. its fine.

A weak part is the plastic gears that Jeff Caplan has manufactured so you don't have to replace the whole gauge:

The engine ticking is probably just the lifters. They collapse until the oil pressure rises, then they fill up with oil.

hmmmm

Thanks for the replies.

So should I get my filters replaced/cleaned?

Perhaps I'll go to my nearest MB workshop and get my speedo sorted out. And my odometer is also not working :S

Thanks again guys.

You can get the lifters replaced, but it's not imperative. The noise is just annoying.
