New custom grille installed (w/pics) :D

Thanks to Scott (run.exe) and Albert (Extreme_E500) for the inspiration I'm too far away to be considered a real copycat

The grille doesn't have dents in it, it's the lighting...what do you think?

Thumbs up Super Cool

I think the new grille looks great on YOUR car. It wouldn’t look good on a more stock looking W124, but it fits well on your super cool black machine. Well done.

Sweet

I take it the registration plate spoils the look a bit or do you not put one on as I dont see the recess in the bumper looks filled in.

Filler Piece, European License, or Black Mercedes Logo

I also don’t need a front plate, because I live in Pennsylvania and I was thinking of getting the filler piece. The dealer has a filler piece, but you can’t get them in body matched paint like you could when the car was new. Between the cost of the part and the painting at a good body shop, I decided it was just too expensive. I run the stainless Mercedes logo plate as a front license plate, but I was considering a lower-profile European-version plate or the black powder coat Mercedes license plate. I think the black powder coat, with a stainless star, would better match my recently painted black grille. I am just a little concerned about chipping paint on the black license plate vs. the all stainless logo plate.

I tried two different S600 style grilles, but they were both such junky parts I couldn’t stand to leave them on my car. I just painted my insert black and purchased all new chrome strips to freshen up the look of the OEM grille. I think it looks great and it is certainly very sturdy and fits perfectly. You can’t say that about those S600 style grilles. They look good in a picture, but I don’t want any junk mounted on my car.

Ksing, I think your grille looks classy

I had my insert piece primed and painted when I had the AMG bumper installed. It was after someone hit me so the cost was nil for me

Hey Ken,

Avoid the black powder coated plate with the Benz logo. I ran it for a year, and it peeled badly. I took it back to the dealer and they replaced it with the one you have right now. Your front end looks pretty classy the way it is

I think I want to do the same to my grille as you did to yours.

One solution to running the black plate without paint chipping is to cover it with 3M...just a thought for you front plate rollers

spending the money on swaybars

Thanks for the heads up about problems with the black powder coat license plate. I like the stainless, but I just thought the black and stainless would really look good with my freshly painted black OEM grille. I don’t think I would like the look of the plate, if it were covered with 3M. I guess I will save my money and wait until I can get the filler piece. I think the filler piece gives the best clean sleek aerodynamic look to the front end of the car. Below is a picture of the front of my car with the OEM grille painted black and all new chrome strips. I think it looks good, but not as cool as ZorroAMG’s mean machine

Right now I am planning to use some money to get the big swaybars, Limo front and E500 rear, and also a spare AMG wheel. I made the mistake of only buying 4 new wheels from Tirerack and the next thing I knew I couldn’t get another wheel because the original 16" AMG Monoblocks were discontinued. The dealer has them, but they cost $475.00 each. That is quite a bit more than the $300,00 I paid at Tirerack. I just want a matching spare, in case anything happens to one of my wheels. Right now, if I ruin one of my wheels, I will have to buy a whole new set. I think it is worth it to pay top dollar for the spare.

Ksing,

Is the S600 grille on your previous pic one of the crappy ones you were talking about? Your new grille painted black looks good, gives the car a clean finish.
About your rim, there are rim repair shops that can perfrom miracles. If you do damage a rim, you could probably get it repaired, even if you have chunks missing. That would save you a lot of money. A shop here will refinish all four of my rims for under $300 CDN, which is not bad......

Zorro, when are you putting your Carlesson's on?

Cheap junk looks good in a picture

Yes, the first picture of my car had the S600 style grille that was junk. As I said, it looks good in a picture, but in real life it is junk.

"W124 swaybars revisited" again

If you use the link below and the links within the link, then you should be up to speed on swaybar information. There is a bit of information about Eibach, Sportline, Limo, and E500 bars. As Cap’n Jasper one said, "W124 swaybars revisited"

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...hlight=swaybar

Simply put, the "Limo" front swaybar is the thickest OEM front swaybar you can get and the shape is perfect for the inline 6-cylinder. It will not fit the V8. The E500 rear swaybar is the biggest OEM rear bar and it fits any W124.
