Parts warranty
My SRS problems are well documented elsewhere and this is really a separate issue.
My new control unit comes with a 12-month warranty. However, I was told that, if the car had been, say 2 years and 10 months old, then a new control unit fitted at no cost to the owner, would automatically become part of the vehicle's standard U.K. 3-year warranty, i.e. it would only have a 2-month warranty.
The moral of this story is that if you pay for the repair yourself, you can have a full warranty, whereas if MB pay for the repair, you can't.
Is this true? If so, can someone please explain the logic to me.

Crazy as it seems, I can see the logic. You simply treat the car as a black box for the first three years, and MB simply ensures that the car functions as designed for the first three years. They paid for the repair, and it fits in the 3-year warranty they provide. After that, you're on your own.
