About to purchase a W124, What should I be weary of?
Hey all,
Long story short I am considering getting a w124, either a 300e - 3.2 or an E320.
What should I look out for when inspecting the vehicle?

I think since you owned a 1989 190 2.3 you would expect the W124 to have similar issues. Indeed, anyone trying to buy a car that is a quarter-century old must be very brave or insane - a car collector or someone who want to derive satisfaction from spending time and money on a restoration project. Anyway, the good thing about W124 is that there are almost no stones unturned about repair and maintenance, but expect to dig deep into your pocket for a rare gem or one you consider worthy of restoration. There are many W124's buyer's Guide online, and read as many as you can before deicing whether to buy and which model, from the basic model I4 or I6 to the V8.

I don't think it's nuts to purchase a W124, so long as you understand what you are getting into. I would think any running 94 or 95 would have the bio junk harness replaced by now. The best looking E class in my mind....

What I was saying, and I believe Plutoe was more direct, is that one must do his/her homework and research before even "thinking" about buying a used W124. An open question and general answer will not help anyone. The W124's general problems and issues have been well documented in the cyber world. Forum members here would not be of much help unless there are any particular issues (about description on the ad, the pictures of a car, or actual observations from the real car) that a prospective buyer has any doubts.

My unsolicited two cents outta the gates would be that you simply cannot have enuf documentation and or history on the vehicle. If it's a private sale and the owner hasn't kept even an informal log of some kind re: repairs etc. than I would run no matter what the price....
Many of the folks in attendance here have significant mechanical abilities and have owned more than two MBZ's or so it seems to me. If you don't share those mechanical aptitudes is yet another reason to adjust your "thinking." Good Luck!
