1993 Mercedes 300CE
Transmission going

So I have spoken to a couple of Mercedes mechanics and the dealership. My reverse gear is going on me - it will vibrabrate when backing up, and backing up hills can be an adventure - I have problems making it up them. Dealership will not rebuild what-so-ever, they want $4200 USD installed for a remanufactured one. Two independant mechanics want $3400 and $3500 respectively (all three come with 2 yr warranties). Last person said there is no one in my general area who is competent enough to rebuild one, that many upgrades have been done by Mercedes.

My question is, should I believe the last gentleman, that a rebuilt of an existing one should be out of the question? Minimum of $3400 is a lot of money.
