1989 300E not shifting up from 2nd
I have been driving this car for about year now. Sometimes the transmission would slip because I had a tranny leak. About a week ago i checked my tranny oil and it was almost empty, so i topped it to the second line and then went onto the highway where i eventually hit traffic causing my car to start heating up. After passing the traffic my car wouldnt go into 4th, then when i got off it wouldnt go into 3rd. I eventually went home about 20 miles in 2nd gear doing about 30 mph the whole way. So here are how it is behaving now: it shifts between reverse and drive just fine. it usually stays in 2nd but sometimes it decided to go into 3rd, but it does not like to go over 40mph in 3rd, though it can do it just fine in 2nd. when im rolling and have the car in neutral, i put it into D and it would engage for a bit then let go down to 2nd. My brother thinks it's a differential problem but i feel like it would have to do with some mechanics of the tranny (either that something is telling the tranny to shift down as if im flooring it, or it's just toasted in general). I already checked the kickdown button and cable, the button is not stuck and the cable still gives me resistance. i also changed the diff oil. any suggestions? worst case scenario i try putting a 350z manual trans in it.
