help on buying an e500

Hello,
my name is Ben, im 18 and ive had a 1982 volvo 244gl w/modified susp. 1990 245gl w/ modified susp. i have a 1984 245 Ti w/modified susp. a 1990 lincoln town car daily driver, that as now broken down for the last time after replacing the transmission 8 months ago with a new one. since 1 month ago i gave up on my lincoln and have decided to throw away my volvos. im in the volvo club and am a frequent on www.turbobricks.com
ive always loved the 560 SELs and the e500s. im willing to get a job to pay for this possible goldish silver E500 with 80k miles, flawless condition, but its $30k.
i know they average around 20-25k, but is it really worth it to pay extra for its mint condition and rather rare color for its model?

oh, btw.
its the only one within 500 miles of where i live.

thanks for your feedback,
Ben

my best adivce for you is NOT to get the car. Unless you are making exceptional money yearly, which i assume you are not if you need a second job to buy a 30k car, then that thing will eat you alive financially!! trust me. all it takes is one good repair bill and you are shafted with car payments and the cost of fixing it. Be sensible! at your age you should be paying 30k for school or other things. hell, if you HAVE to have a benz no matter what then go lease a new one. at least you wont have the liability of repairs on an expensive car. the "dad" in me says wait!! save up the money and buy the car when you can afford it. good luck either way

I came in a compromise with my family, my Brother owns a mortgage company in Orange County, and hes willing to give me a job there doing some light desk work in return i go to a college here and the car payment of whatever it might be, 500 bucks in spending money per month and 1K service allowance per 6 months before i have to pay for servicing ot of my pocket. he said 1K per 6 months because his 1997 s500 is around 1k per year, he thinks since the E500 is more rare and older, it would cost nearly twice that. i think im going to take him up on that offer, my mom is signing loan paperwork for a 30K car, doesnt need to be that E500. i find a car, buy it, pack my things in my house, and my room will just become a room no one uses but me when i come back every couple weeks.
thanks for your input, both this forum and Benzworld has helped me alot on this small situation and 30k is alot for that particular car.

If you're serious about purchasing a 500E mine is currently for sale. The color you want is smoke silver, mine is Black Pearl.

If you're still interested the asking price is $28,000 firm, the car has 66K miles on it. In June of this year it took first place at the Huntington Beach Concours competing against 9 other cars, it's nearly perfect in every way. The car still has a warranty valid until March of 2005. I'm located in Riverside County and can be contacted by email at placo1@msn.com.

Not sure if the photo attachment will work, if not you can see more of my car on Autotrader: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...lor=&cardist=0

Why not get a 94-95 E420?

It will cost less to buy, to maintain/repair, and isn't exactly "slow."

In fact, why not get a Dodge Magnum R/T?

It is new, has a warranty, and uses parts from the W210 E class, and is fast (340 hp V-8). If you get into an accident with it, it is no big deal because it is a Dodge and not some super rare, hand-built Mercedes-Benz.

yeah, but im stuck on getting an E500, if i play my cards right, it will be paid for in full, less than a year from now, my parents would say im a responsible person paying for the payments, my brothers would hel pme out money wise, i dont pay for insurance, and we all seem to charge gas on my dad's atm card that gets 3000 every month for retirement.

and mostly...i always wanted an E500, every since i saw my godfather's in the vatican (cardinal who owns an e500) (and also owns a 560sel, which i really wouldnt mind owning). i ave no idea hwo he got one, but he had it since new, i was stuck on it since. and then i see this smoke silver E500 beauty for sale just 150 miles south of me. im going to be paying 27k for it, i talked the person down.

thanks for your input guys!

500E -92 and 560SEL -90
I don't know what it costs to get a 500 from Europe over to you.. but if it's not a big problem then check out the prices in Germany fx.. (fx at www.mobile.de)

I bought mine for the price of 10.000 Euro in Germany. The car had 145.000 km on it and was/is in a very good condition.

Maintained properly it could be a pretty good buy since it has a little of (or will probably get) a colectors value. At least it will not loose it's value like if you buy a new E500

If you treat the car well it's not that expensive to own the car. At least not here according to my experience. Servicing should be done by some skilled machanic with long experience, that you trust. It's nothing overcomplicated with the car that you need Mercedes to do at double the price..the least.

As always with Mercedes.. it's better to spend some more money to get a car that you KNOW is in very good condition and that you KNOW have been treated and maintained well, than trying to save money at that point. Cause you will then loose them later instead many times around in repair bills.

Go ahead and buy it...you only live once. Really, MBZs 500E is probably the cleanest, most well maintained one you'll find around. 30gs is too much for a stock 94' though, you should beat him down on the price... and smoke silver is not that rare of a color for the 500E....bright red and white are though.

You'll want to be sure about it too; you must LOVE this monkey... 500Es will/can be $$$ to maintain, especially at this age. Consider an aftermarket warranty like Heritage....they did me right so far with my 500E...over $5000 in repairs in 2 years for a $1500 policy for a car with over 100K on it...not bad.

vasir,
why don't you buy a 500E for a lot less (here in europe they start at about $8.000) with some more miles and ok, an older modell, but at least it's payable...
Drive the 500E for about a year or 2, and then, when you don't have to worry about the price, go for the E500.
just suggesting.

greetzz,

matteus
