cooling tips for w124 engine
Hi all,
My e220 is in a tropical weather Singapore and the engine tends to get really hot. I have modified the fan to switch on at a lower temperature. What other options do I have.
I was asked to:
1. Add a SPAL fan to improve cooling.
2. Add a engine oil cooler.
Any comments on what is the best and most cost effective, coz I am not sure what the compatibility of after market fans (in terms of cfm) to the original one. Also, the only oil cooler I found is from renntech (E500) and it costs a bomb...and I am not sure if it fits.

Add some 'Water Wetter' to your coolant (by Redline)...it will help a bit. I'm quite sure there is a seperate oil cooler for your car...in Europe (as you know) folks love to tow trailers and campers with their W124s....oil coolers are necessary; even an option on some cars. I will check my euro-W124 parts CD for a part number for you.
Perhaps add some cooling louvres to the hood(?)...I'm an contemplating this for my 500E , which probably runs the hottest out of all the W124s.
Of course, if your radiator and coolant is old, new ones may make a difference in cooling also.

Double-check if the manual allows it, but you may alter the coolant mix to 70% water. Water has twice the thermal transfer characteristics of antifreeze and this requires no modification to your vehicle.
Also try removing the horns. I'm appalled at how tight everything is at the radiator, impeding air flow.
