How do I get it to downshift???

I have a '94 E320 that is a really great car. The only thing that really annoys me is that it refuses to downshift as far or as fast as I would like. It will not go down to 1st gear at slow speeds or sometimes down to 2nd from 4th when passing. Is there anything that can be done to the electronics to change shift points. I'd love for it to immediately find the lowest gear possible whenever the pedal is mashed against the floorboard.

When you floor the accelerator at a stop, the transmission should start in first gear. When you are accelerating normally, put the selector in 2nd then back to D to start in 1st gear. You can also get a 1st gear start kit from BergWerks. It is a modified valve body.

i have tried try adjusting the bowden cable on my 93 E 320
and it is now very sensitive and kicks down aggressively.

i suggest to tighten the cable by 1/4 to 1/2 turn and observe

Thanks for the reply. Pardon my ignorance, but what is the "Bowden Cable"? That is a term I have never heard.

The Bowden cable connects the throttle body (accel. cable) to the transmission. When you let-up on the accelerator the transmission knows you no longer need as much power, so it shifts up.

Thanks again for the reply. Since I left the last message I did a little research and learned that bowden cable is the generic name. Sorry.

I'll give this adjustment a try. Thanks again for the tip.

its the cable that goes down to the transmission. the adjustment nut is at the left rear corner of the engine behind the fuel distributor. since i am not still satisfied with the response i tighten it again to 3 full turns from zero position and the sluggishness and slippage is not present anymore.

if you look at the cables behind the fuel distributor, there are two cables
one is from gas pedal and the other one is the transmission cable at the rear corner of engine head cover

You should also check the fuses. If I remember correctly, current for the kick down switch in the floor under the gas pedal goes through fuse nr. 7. If that fails, the switch won´t work and the car won´t downshift normally.

The Bowden cable probably does not exist in your model. As I said in the e-mail, the accelerator control is electronic, and as such, the transmission control probably is as well.

The local Euro Garage told me that on the 94-95 E320's the link between the throttle and transmission is vacuum tube that can be adjusted down at the transmission. I haven't tried to find it yet...
