There are a few simple checks you can do before you see a MB shop. First the charcoal canister sits under the fender in the front. So I dont think this is the reason. But in the trunk you have the gas tank behind the carpet wall and on top of the tank there is the level sensor mounted which may have come loose and gas smell escapes into the trunk. Secondly remove the carpet or plastic cover on the passenger side (LHD). There you can check the inside of the gas filler assembly and the breather assembly of the gas tank.
Underneath the car there is a plastic cover over the fuelpumps (passenger side under rear seats area). You can remove the cover and see if anything is wet or leaking. But I doubt this will be causing the smell in the trunk, but you never know.
Other than that I would not know where to check as a DIY.

I'm pretty sure he means inside the trunk, next to the spare tire well. I think the feul tank sending unit might be loose like bamberger said. This is the tall unit that monitors the fuel tank capicity. As I recall I think it is secured by a very large nut and pretty hard to remove, i.e. tightly sealed. You might check the gas filler neck where it joins the tank.
