'89 300TE shift knob

Hello,

Does anyone know if the shift knobs on the earlier E class were permanently attached or can they screw off? Does just the knob screw off or is it one entire piece (knob and shaft) that comes out? I bought a really nice burl wood shift knob for my '89 300TE but I can not for the life of me get the original black spongey rubber one off. Cheers for the help.

Funny, I bought the same new knob. Mine's Zebrano Wood though.

You need to remove the edge cover of the shiftgate, then remove the wood around the shifter and window buttons via the 2 screws in the glovebox, then take apart the actual gearbox with the P,R,N,D,3,2 on it, and from there you should be good.

Sorry for being vague, but it was a while ago I did this.

So the knob does not come off the metal shaft? My new shift knob is just that, the knob, not the shaft. Is it possible to remove just the black spongey knob without the entire knob/shaft assembly?

Hey thanks a lot for the pics and walk-through! I guess you can't keep the original shaft and put just a new knob on it? That is my question. The knob and shaft are all one piece and I will have to replace it all I suppose? THis is what I bought:

I need the whole assembly with the shaft attached, right? I cannot use the one above I guess...
