Transmission slipping in reverse 722.418
1992 300D 2.5 Turbo, 187,000 miles, 722.418 transmission.
When the car is cold, and it is put in Reverse the transmission slips, with increasing frequency. If I am on an even surface the car will move backward but not respond to increased rpms. If I shift to forward gears and back to reverse several times I feel the reverse engage and everything then seems fine. I have driven 1000+ miles since first having the problem. When the car is warm I have only had the reverse slip once. I did a transmission service at 172,000 the level has been good and fluid clean.
I took it to a MB dealer with a writeup similiar to this, and there response was that I needed a new valve body $1350 or possibly a transmission $4500, recommending the new transmission because they did not know if the valve body would correct the problem.
There is no slippage in forward gears.

Assuming your oil and filter is ok, you´re most likely looking at worn out clutch disks in the B3 clutch. 4 brake disks & 4 steel disks.
It is the largest clutch, surrounding the front planetary gearset. It engages only in reverse, so all forward gears can be normal.
This is a common failure item when transmissions get old.
-Sounds to me like it´s time for an overhaul.
