Reattaching Speedometer Cable troubles

I'm having difficulty in reattaching my speedometer cable after replacing the gage cluster light dimmer potentiometer. I do have it disconnect from the hold back on the steering column,
Thank you in advance for any guidance.

What seems to be the problem? Did you disconnect it at the transmission to leave you enough slack?

I just disconnected the cable from the gage cluster only.

Does the '93 300CE have a mechanical speedo? Meaning a steel cable goes from the transmission to the cluster. I thought so but have never owned one.
If it does, I'm pretty sure you are better off to disconnect the cable on the other end to give you slack. You may even damage the cable if you do not by tugging on it.
You can imagine how easy it would be if you disconnected on the other end.

And when you do, be careful putting it back together because you need a certain slack when it is installed, otherwise you will end up with some wobble and noise coming from the cluster.
So the harness should be secured at the same location under the car.

Hopefully some one with your exact model will chime in, but I'm pretty confident I'm correct.

- Cheers

It's possible but very hard to connect it back without disconnecting the cable on the transmission first, and as dolucasi said it's possible you'll damage something by doing that.
I remember breaking a bracket which held the cable on my old W124 after connecting the speedo cable that way, everytime the car drove the cable would move and make annoying noises.
