Changing water pump and rear wheel bearings

Has anyone changed their water pump and rear wheel bearings? Is it a big job? Is it worth trying myself? Any suggestions or tips would be welcome. 102 engine. (2.3 litre 4 cyl 1988)

I presume the rear wheel bearings need replacing as I can hear a strange speed proportional hoaning sound from the rear.

I pressume the water pump needs replacing as it is running hotter than it did 1 year ago, especially in idle conditions on a hot day. (reaches 90-95degC)

I don't think you need a new water pump. They are only changed if it starts leaking coolant through the weep hole. Your hot engine may be due to other things such as scale in the cooling system or a lazy thermostat. Sometimes treating the radiator can perk up the cooling system.

The noise in the rear may be something other than the bearings. It could be the tires, differential, or brake pads. Have you checked the fluid level in the differential? It's too expensive to *****-nilly replace the rear wheel bearings. You should have something like this properly diagnosed.

Don't forget to check the fan clutch.

I have checked the fan clutch, engages at temp and works fine. Will check the weep hole and thermostat next. Will also try some radiator treatment.

The diff fluid level is fine and tyres 2/3 wear. The noise is intermittent day to day and doesn't appear to be road surface type specific. Will rotate the tyres with the front (only 1/3 wear) and listen for change. New brake pads fitted last week. (Noise occuring for past 3 months) Hopefully just tyre wear.

Watch out for those fuses. Fixed my blinker problem changing what appeared to be a perfectly fine fuse. It had actually fractured at the end where it folds over into the conical shape! This can't be seen unless you remove the fuse. If you have an electrical problem, change fuse first, then diagnose if problem persists!

If the noise fromt he rear goes away when turning in one direction, then the bearings are bad.

I had a bad rear bearing and the noise would go away when turning one direction so I had them both changed.

The running hot on the car, what temp does it run at normally. it should stay around 80-85 normally and can go up to 100 normally.

If it is always at 100 or above, you need to investigate it more.

I would make sure you are using the right MB collant it is like a pink color.

I would probably flush the cooling system, replace the thermostat, and put in new MB coolant and see if that makes a difference.

The green coolant or the orange high mileage stuff found at most auto parts places is bad for an MB.

To treat the radiator, use a citric acid-based treatment. Follow directions and don't leave it in too long. It should help descale your cooling system, including the radiator.
