Question regarding command in 98 E430

Is there a way I can get the TV to work even with the car in motion? I know its dangerous to watch and drive. But in the country where I live, traffic here crawls and is often times at a standstill. Is a hassle to put park brake on and the tranny in "P" to watch TV, then have to put it back in "D" and release handbrake just to inch a yard or two during rush hour. Based on a study, traffic here travels at a rate of about 5kmh during rush hour.

Pardon my ignorance, where is the CD for the NAV system located? How to I change the CD?

Thanks.

I didn't know Command was an option in the '98 models. I've never seen one.

I believe it must be a Euro comand for the motion TV,as he explained when he did mine. But mark is right in verifying with him.Be careful tho,,,it is very tempting and not safe to watch.

I am 95% sure that it is a japanese spec unit...210 820 15 89...it has the climate controls integrated in the headunit...I never knew though that those were used in the 210s as well...

Wow, you guys are smart. How did you figure out Im from the Phils? And yes, my car is imported from Japan.

Anyone here have any info about that command system? I have a few questions Im hoping someone can answer:

Can I get it to play DVDs? So far I can only watch TV on it.

It has a keypad with phone functions on it. How can I load a SIM card into its phone?

Is there a way I can get its TV to work without the tranny being in "N" or "P" and without the park brake on?

Its command system currently show japanese streets, is there a way I can change the command CD?

Where else can one find a colorful number plate with the tower in the middle but Manila! Can't fool a well travelled stud like me, even with the blurring .....welcome on board Nice choice of badges btw....(but I like mine black and white ).

Thanks man.

The plates with the tower are the newer plates, the older ones were just green letters and numbers on a plain white background. I prefer those over these new ones, but the old ones are no longer available.

We used to have a Eurocar Parts shop in Happy Valley HK. I think in terms of price, HK is a bit cheaper on normal maintainance parts and loads cheaper on electronics and other parts which are not normally replaced. But in terms of parts availability you guys have it so much better there in HK. Whenever I need parts that are not available locally, I would source them in HK thru our old contact.

In case you will be here, give me a holler.

You did? Which one man? Sure i will give u a holler and this certainly solves the mystery of the Jap spec command I guess......I think we might have some things to talk about next time we meet...I have a small plan in mind..

OEM parts and maybe Jap wheels are cheaper here (if you know where to find them but generally expensive for the ignorant, I've observed...) My wheel guy ships loads of excellent condition used highend wheels to Phils to sell too....may be he's your contact? It isn't Ken is it?

no - definitely no DVDs on that
it needs an additional phonemodule in the trunk of the car
most probably you can get the TV to be enabled in motion through MB stardiagnose
just change the nav disc - but knowing the 203 japanese comands there most probably isn't a non japanese disc that works on that unit...

You should be able to bypass the Park feature you have to do 3 things
1) Find the wire that ties the radio to the p brake
2) Test the wire to see if its a positive or negative switch (just ground the wire if the tv comes on the its a negative if not try to run it to a live 12 volt wire if the tv comes on then its a positive.
3) once you figure that out Permanently ground or power the wire and vuala TV all day.
I had to do this in my Lincoln Navigator I would suggest having a good car audio shop do it for you it can get a bit frustrating trying to find the wire.

erm...this is not a lincoln...
CANBUS is what passes the signals that disable TV...CANBUS is also what passes the signals for the navigation and illumination (amongst other signals)...no CANBUS - no properly functioning unit

Hi Whitey,

The shop was called Alpha Motors Inc, at Happy Valley near the race track. My contact's name is Billy.

Inform me if you will be coming to the Philippines.

I reallize this is not a lincoln. But thank you for pointing that out anyway. That SIGNAL that you are talking about is what were looking to duplicate almost all oem and aftermarket indash monitors have this disableing feature built in bypassing it is not an impossilble thing. Take it from a MECP certified installer it can be done.

certified or not - there is a big difference between MB headunits controlled over CANBUS and aftermarket ICE systems that directly hook into the parking brake switch (amongst other)...take that from me...eventhough I am not a certified installer of anything...

There has to be an advantage installing a new Euro unit that meshes perfectly to the car, over something aftermkt.Having done the work ala Mbenz, there is perfect integration,no bugs,or gitters. Why take a chance?

I realize there is a difference, But thank you for pointing that one out too Now lets get back to the point no matter what system the head unit may be linked to on fact still remains if you find the corresponding wire you can bypass the P brake feature. Now you can keep telling our friend here that what he wants to do is imposible or you can try to find a way to help him with his situation. Nothing in this world is impossible some people are just too lazy to figure things out.

My five cents here...

Maja216,

I guess to some extent, your logic does work but on a purely electrical perspective. Meaning there are certain components that are literally hooked to certain wires, which if by-passed can effectively be turned on.

However, the Mercedes CANBUS system is not a simple electrical logic interface, but a set of integrated interfaces wherein one component does not rely simply on one electrical switch but a series of "switches" or steps that has to happen and must be followed in a certain logical fashion for a component to work. The sequence is non-bipassable and therefore cannot be hardwired.

I tried to understand this when I added Navigation to my car and wanted a multi-fuction steering wheel. I even bought a set of original MB mechanic manuals for my car so I could understand the electrical interface. Logically, anyone would think that with the proper set of wires, one could control the navigation through the steering wheel buttons. Apparently, that is not the simple case. One word was prevalent all over the manual - and that was CANBUS.

Anyway.. that was a pretty long story and I see no need to get there. My explanation is my meek attempt to show it as best as I can logically understand it. An no I am not a electronics expert nor am I certified car mechanic.

I am just a banker and I did not stay at the Holiday Inn last night.
