Recall on the W210 coming soon
The wheel is composed of a rubber ring around a metal flywheel. Over time, the rubber cracks and breaks off the metal part. This causes the metal part to shift backward abruptly, rupturing the oil pan (which sounds like you'd have a bad day).
The replacement job runs several hundred dollars now, but of course will be free once the notices arrive in the mail.
fyi.

Just a couple of days ago, my mech said I'm most probably in need of a new flywheel or have it repaired or something .......Please do keep us posted
I know I should contact the dealer, and will. But if they aren't going to deal with me because I don't have a legitimate notice which was mailed to me from MB, I'll be out of sorts.

In a recall notice the is covered if it has a VIN# in the list. It does not mater who owns the car where it was bought etc. The dealer get paid my Mercedes-Benz so as long as the say they did xxx work under recall on VIN#xxxx and it matches an recall notice by the factory they get paid.
There are two reasons to send notices. 1) Not all owners read these fourms and second is to try prevent the dealers and replacment parts supply to overloaded with everyone in 2-3 days.

The HB issues is very well know and a hot topic on some other boards. I stumbled across this issue after buying my '96 E320 but the more I read, it obvious that it was also in the W210s (and lots of Ms) with the V6s.
I believe '96 and '97 were the only years to retain the inline version
and that the V6 became standard issue in the '98 models.
I just talked to a gal at the 800 number given ablove - Mercedes Benz Customer Service line. I did get the correct information to them about me being the latest owner of the car.
She told me that she didn't think that this recall was going to affect E-Class cars back to year 2000, but I'd be notified if it was. Not much to do but wait and see. If, in the mean time, my balancer goes bad, it seems I'd be in a pretty good position for having a replacement made by MB.
