1997 E-420 Transmission Service
Today I got my 1997 E-420 transmission service at MB dealer. Before the service the car tranny was shifting little harder from 1-2 and 2-3. Now after tranny service it is smooth like new one. I have 112K Miles on car. According to dealer the transmission pan/magnet did not have any metal particle on it, that means the tranny is in good shap. Following parts used for tranny service [Its on my invoice].
1 140-277-00-95 Transmission oil filter
1 140-271-00-80-64 Gasket
8 001-989-21-03-10 Transmission oil

No life time synthetic fluid for transmission
I drove car again today, the tranny working great after the transmission fluid change service.
I believe there is no life time synthetic fluid for transmission. My transmission was hard in shifting from 1-2 and 2-3. But now it is very smooth.
I wish I had done tranny service before 112K miles. In my opinion, I recommend to service tranny every 60K Mies.
Any feed backs ??

Update on Tranny
It has been a month and 1500 miles since I got tranny service done at MB dealer.
Car runs great. Tranny shifting smoothly. I believe I did the right thing and changed the tranny fluid.
There is no life time tranny fluid. It is ok to spend $300 and get tranny service rather then paying $3000 for new tranny.

I did my transmission change at 65K mileage and my recent one at 135K
feels better, and I did change the gasket since the gear was getting loose...
hopefully it'll last a lot longer before it breaks down.. :P

1997 E420
I have 97 E420 with 80k miles on it and I just called the dealership to get the tranny fluid changed. He said its going to cost $180. He also told me that for this particlular model transmission fluid change is recomended every 30k miles.
Its the first time I have heard that and I am not sure if he told me the right thing.

$180 is best deal
$180 for tranny service is sound pretty low.

1997 E420 tranmission service
Today I went to a Mercedes authorized workshop and they told me that 1997 E420 tranny is sealed and therefore you are not suppose to service or change Tranny oil on it. I am confused now because I called dealership is saying they can do it. I wonnder if dealership is trying to rip off or the other guy does'nt know what he is talking about.

W210 Transmission Does Need Service
I believe the owner's manual says it's good for 100 K miles. I had mine serviced at 85 K. The fluid was clean but there was some gunk in the pan. Shifting somewhat smother after the service. I had the dealer do it and they charged $245. My car is '97 E320 which has always been driven conservatively.
