Outside Temp and acceleration problems

I have two questions here?

I have a 97 E320 that the Outside Temp stopped working. I need to know where the sensor is located and how to gain access to it. I ordered the tools to remove the dash and will check the connectors.

Also he car runs very well unless you do an all out start. It acts as though it is not at full power. At about 30mph it surges with more power and again at 45 to 50 mph. From a 30mph rolling stomp there is no serge at all. I also don't know if this is just a characteristic of the inline 6. The car is still quick, the power band is just not as smooth as I thing it should be. The car set in a garage not started for over a year. It has 52M miles on it. I replaced the fuel filter and still the same. I think next is plug wires and plugs. Has anyone had this problem.
This is my first Benz but wont be my last.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Jere

The outside temp sensor is in the front bumper on the drivers side. What exactly do you mean when you say it is bad? If the display is bad you need to replace the instrument cluster. If it reads the wrong temperature, then the sensor could be bad or it has fallen out of the bumper and could be reading the wrong temp.

It sounds like your MAF (Mass Aif Flow) sensor could be dirty or you have a fuel pressure problem.

The readout on the dash just quit working a few weks ago.

When you say the MAF could be dirty. Can it be cleaned?

The read out could be a cluster problem. You could try unplugging the connectors in the back and reconnecting them. I know that if you connect to the one that supplys power before the one that has the sensor input, it will not display the outside temp.

Some people have cleaned the inside of the MAF with without damaging it. You have to use something that will not leave a residue but gets the dust or most cases the oil off of it. One way to test if it is breaking down inside is to tap on it while the engine is running. If the engine dies or surges when you tap it, it probably has a problem and should be replaced. They are about $300 but you can swap it out yourself in a few minutes.

I took the MAF off and it appeared very clean. I used some compressed air and carefully blew the sensor out. I took it out for a spin and is much better. I will check the connection on the outside temp as soon as my cluster tools arrive.
Thanks for your input E-Klasse.
