It's telling you that your air/fuel mixture reading is outside its "normal" range at idle and/or partial throttle. According to AllData, possible causes include intake air leak, injectors, diaphragm pressure regulator and engine wear.

The normal range can be reprogrammed by driving for 30 minutes. The coolant temp at startup must be less than 60 degrees C (i.e. completely cold).

Possibly the Mass Air Flow sensor. Those go out all the time.

I can't help with the tie rods, but I can for the Mass Air Sensor. I had the same code about 6 months ago, and I ignored it (and the CE light) until one day when I was trying to accelerate hard on the highway, and the car bucked like it was having a transmission problem. I guess I don't floor the car very often, but after reading about the P0170 symptoms, I gave it a shot. It's been problem-free ever since.

See http://www.mercedesshop.com/ Under FastLane's Special Order Parts, order #1120940048. It was $299.00 delivered.

Regards,
Steve

Do a search on this forum because you should not pay more than around $160 for the meter with free shipping.
