OBD II, have you guys heard of this?
On Thursday, me and my dad took the E320 to test the emissions so we could re-new the insurance. Passed with flying colors but when we talked to the guy, he said he couldn't find the OBD...
I know the OBD II is for checking malfunction codes but why would the guy need to test it? Anyways, where exactly is the OBD system? Do you think it was removed or it just died by itself??

The guy's an idiot. If he didn't find it, you couldn't have been smogged. The computer MUST be plugged in to the OBD-II port of your car in order to run a smog test.

Sure the guy's an idiot, but why couldn't he have smogged it without OBD-II? How do you think they test pre-OBDII cars manufactured before 1996? Here in VA they run all cars on a dyno at varying speeds with a probe in the tailpipe.
I'd take the much shorter OBD-II smog checks instead any day. Better yet, how about no smog tests!

On OBD-II cars, part of the check is to scan for malfunction codes. Non OBD-II cars are just a tailpipe and visual inspection for smog equipement, but everything since '96 HAS to be connected to the machine, at least in the US. Maybe that's the difference. None of that makes sense anyway. If it burns clean, who cares what you have under the hood?

You absolutely cannot pass smog on an OBD-II car without it being plugged into the emissions computer. In addition, the car is put on a simulator (not a dynomometer) to place a load on the engine, AND a probe is stuck in the pipe to read the actual emission levels. This information (along with the car's VIN)is passed electronically to Big Brother, so there's no cheating. This is true for most, but not all states/counties, YET. However, it still doesn't make sense to need any of this crap if the sniffer says it's burning clean. I mean, who cares if you're running a big block Chevy with a 8-71 blower stickin' out of the hood if it ain't polluting!!!????

Ok, right now i'm looking at the report. Blah blah blah, # # #, pass pass pass...
GENERAL INFORMATION
-Your vehicle has passed.
-The report maybe be necessary when licensing the vehicle.
YOUR VEHICLE'S ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM WAS INTERROGATED
MIL engine off(KOEO) PASS
MIL engine on(KOER) PASS
DLC Tampering FAIL(Advisory Only)
OBD II Communications INCOMPLETE(Advisory Only)
MIL Command status INCOMPLETE(Advisory Only)
Readiness Monitors: No monitors identified
Diagnostic Trouble Codes: No codes identified
For further information on OBD, consult manual or dealer.
This was back in July when I posted and I kinda forgot...
Right now i'm looking for the report from last year to compare the info...
P.S. I did make a post saying that my odometer reads 999999KM. Could the OBD II have to do something with it? What do you think of the overall situation?

things with and without wheels
The odometer readout has nothing to do with the obdII.(onboard diagnostic)
In order to pass Federal emissions with 1996 or newer vehicle,it should be plugged into the obdII to check for codes.People that work at the state run inspection stations are not mechanics and most of the time they are performing a function that they were shown by somebody and still have no clue why .On my 2001 e-320 the obdII dignostic connector is on the driver's side hush panel below the steering column .If your service engine soon light is on you will not pass the inspection ,at least in New Jersey ,untill you repair the fault and clear the codes. If the vehicle is pre obdII then it will be put on the dyno (simulator) to check the 4 gasses comming out of the tail pipe if within the limits you pass. It's funny they have these fancy machines to check the emissions but the stopped checking basic safety items like head light alligment or raise the front end to check the ball joints or steering linkages. What really bugs me about these state run inspection stations is the people that work there give you this attitude like they are doing you a favor when they are checking your car and hope for the moment they find something to fail you for

I hear that. Went to the NJ DMV the other day and my car couldn't interface with their system. They told me that the OBDII is not responding. I went to another place and it says the same thing so something is up with my car also.
Bumpin an old thread cuz I have the same problem.

Update: So my dad has been trying to sell the E320
and some guy came over today to have a look at the car. He actually works at Aircare (smog test) and said they can't read some brand new BMW's OBDII or even get inside the computer. Sounds like my situation and your mta2.
LOL, The guy had to deal with my mom first and she said he was bossing her around and talking about all this auto jargon until I came out and started talking to him. Can't talk to someone like that if they know about cars!

where is the OBD2 connector?? Shouldn't it be in the driver's side foot well? I found some connector but my OBD2 connector isn't fitting in? It fits in my 04 S500 and reads it fine

Underside
of the driver dash about the area above where your left knee is you will see the little flap behind which the obd2 port is located.
