What RPM are you at?
Do you think it could be the exhaust system just droning?

So you've narrowed it down that it isn't from your unsprung weight (wheels + brakes and such) and it's coming from the back.

Do you have anything installed in the rear that might act as a air diffuser? Could be because at that speed something is hitting hard?

One thing that just hit my head since you said it's been getting worse is..

motor mounts. They could be worn out.

Could be a bad rear tire, bad belt or such. Balancing will not help that

97 E420 with 57k miles
Vibration

I have a 97 E420 with 60k miles on it. I have had the same problem for over 8 months and it was driving me crazy. After replacing a tire, which I was told had an excessive hop in it, the vibraton seemed milder but not gone. I thought maybe another tire was bad. I recently took the car to the dealer for its 60k service and told them I thought I had a bad front tire with an exsessive hop in it. The dealer came back and said that the left shock absorber was over heating and the lower front left and right control arms were leaking. The dealer replaced the left front shock absorber, both lower control arms and bushings as well as the upper right control arm and both front spring coils now the problem is completely taken care of. Thank goodness I had the starmark warranty and none of this cost me a dime. I was told the repairs would have been several thousands of dollars. Good luck.

things with and without wheels
Try the lower cost items first such as tires and rims.
Wheel bearings and differential also are known to cause these symptoms too

I would have the rear tires re-balanced. Sounds like either one has thrown a weight or the belt on the tire has shifted.

Hi Robert, I took that information straight from the dealer invoice. I did not think they had fluid, and maybe they do not, that is just what they typed.

My 97 E420 had, what sounds like, the same problem. The main culprit was a wheel that was out of round. I had the tires replaced, balanced, rebalanced, etc. The shop did not notice the wheel until I spoke with the tech on the floor. They try to balance out wheel problems (if they are minor). The wheel vibration transmitted to my steering wheel at 55mph to 65 mph. I ended up replacing my lower control arm bushings because they were also worn-out and making the vibration transmit even worse.
After a new set of wheels, it is doing very well. I still plan to replace my shocks in the near future.

Good luck with yours. Does anyone know if the KYB's on Ebay are any good? They are advertising them for $160 for the set of 4.

The lower control arm bushings are liquid filled. When the bushing breaks
the liquid will leak out.

KYB off Ebay

I used the KYB's off ebay on my 2000 E-class. The front shocks feel very nice, but the rear shocks rattle your teeth over every bump. I went back to stock on the rear and I am running KYB in the front. Very nice ride with that set-up. I am also running stock height and 18" rims.
