Tools necessary for changing breaks and rotors
I have decided that I am going to try to change the rotors and breaks on my '98 E320 myself. I am willing on investing some money in tools and was wondering what kind of tools should I get for changing the breaks and rotors?? I would like to think long term because if I am doing this then I might as well start doing the oil changes and regular service As/Bs myself instead of paying the ~$450 to the dealer.
Safety is definitely a priority, so what's the best/safest option when it comes to raising the car?
Thanks!

depending on what caliper u have either a 7 allen or a 40 torx. and im pretty sure its a 19 mm holding the bracket for the caliper and its a 5 hex holding the rotor to the hub. as for tool brands i choose snap on.
floor jack and jack stands. get the package from sears.

Be aware that in this world, things go wrong. I tried to do the brakes and rotors this weekend. Pretty straightforward once you get into it- see greg210s excellent post, but I had a stuck piston in the caliper. Now I have to get it towed and fixed at a mechanic. It got out of my ability. I'm probably a minority, but....

C clamp to push piston back gently, mallet to pound out rotor, wire coat hanger to keep caliper from dangling on hoses. Gloves. I tell my friends I buy MB because I can save more money changing brakes! Don't want to do all that work just to save $50. By the way, the MLs brakes wear out ~20-30Kmiles. So I am saving even more money! I still remember the SA asking me if I was a new MB owner after I complained about the short brake life and expensive service cost! I told him, I've been cheap all my life and buying a MB won't change that! I told him I missed the SNOB MB class. Apparently, he didn't.
Anyway, back on topic, I've changed brakes on all my cars and once you get the hang of it you will look forward to them wearing out. NOT!
