'96 E320; Volume Control

The volume control is not working properly. On/Off is fine, however the contol doesn't always work properly when either increasing or decreasing the volume. Is this an easy repair to the head? If not, any suggestions on a factory "reconditioned" unit?

Thanks,
Mark

This is a common problem with the '96-'98 Becker head unit. Don't know that there is any fix other than replacing with another head unit.

Is the '96 head interchangeable with other years, i.e. '97 & '98? Any good sources for a refurb'd unit? Thanks.

Yes, it is interchangeable with '96-'98. '99 and onwards use a different head units. Don't know about refurbished units. In general, though, I would expect refurbished units to eventually fail from the same problem and cost more than quality brand new aftermarket head units. It might be cheaper (and better sounding) to go with an aftermarket unit like Alpine, which match the rest of the dash fairly well. I understand your concern about keeping everything looking factory.

You can even put a 2000+ OEM stereo in, but you CD changer will not work because the new one is optical.

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions on an Alpine unit or other aftermarket head?

Try pushing the knob up while turning for volume settings. Of course what I mean by "push" is not "in" but "up". You´ll find a little bit of play in the axis of the knob. I think that´s the reason for the deffective behavior.

Mine acts wierd too , sometimes when I turn down the volume it goes up or vice versa , but when I apply a little bit of leverage up on the knob while turning, it works fine . I learned to live with that. I consider this a "minor issue" so I´m not swapping the unit because of this.
Hope this helps.

The shaft tends to get a worn spot from use. Another trick is to turn it way up or way down and reset the radio by holding in the +/- buttons simultaneously for a couple seconds. This should change the part of the shaft that is normally adjusting the rheostat switch. May help a little.

You can have the head unit repaired, http://www.carstereohelp.com/mercedes.htm

I have the same volume control issue in my 97 E320 but have not repaired it. I just push the knob in a lateral direction while turning (does not necessarily have to be up).
