Sunroof issues

Have a problem with my sunroof...
  • When I open the sunroof, it slides back about 4 inches and then stops.
  • If I release and press the switch again, it slides back another 2 inches or so and stops.
  • If I push the switch forward to close, nothing happens
  • If I push the switch up to tilt (while the roof is open about 6 inches), it closes normally and then tilts
  • If I push the switch forward to close the tilt, nothing happens. I have to pull back (as if to open the roof) to drop the tilt and let go before it slides open.

Any thoughts?

That's interesting. I have a 98 E320 4matic and am having the same problem. It is intermittent in that it happens once in a while but goes away. It seems to happen when the car is in the sun on a hot day. As soon as it cools down, the problem seems to go away If you figure out what's causing it, and what the fix is, please let us know.

I wonder if it's the switch itself? Maybe it expands when it gets hot and loses electrical contact?

Don't know yet. The problem first occured a few days ago. I tried tilting it and closing, and it wouldn't close. (Had to "open" it to close.)

Some of the threads in the archives discuss a similar problem where the sunroof stops halfway and makes popping noises. I don't have any strange noises. Just it doesn't open correctly and the close position on the switch doesn't work.

All you have to do is re-synchronize the sunroof. Run it all the way back, then press and hold the switch in the up position like you would be opening it to vent. This will close the sunroof and then raise it to the vent position. Continue to hold the switch for about 3 seconds afterwards, you will hear a click sound which is confirming it is synchronized. Also when you are holding the switch, some are 2 position switches. If this is the case, only press it to the first position.

By the way, this also works for the windows if your window ever stops working on the one touch mode.

Thanks for the tip MBTech. Any thoughts on why the sunroof would randomly become unsynchronized? I haven't lost battery power... Does this explain why the forward switch doesn't work but the tilt switch does?

Yes, thats probably why the switch is acting weird. As for losing memory, they can do that for numerous reasons, losing power as you mentioned, if they havent been ran the whole range of its operation in a while, or over time it can just lose it. Also if it starts getting to the point where it wont hold memory at all, the motor might need replacing due to a faulty hall sensor.
