Airbag Light
Hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to turn on and off the passenger airbag? A friend of mine just bought a E430 and the airbag off light is on right there on the console where the shifter is.
Is there a way to turn the bag on and off?
Thank you,
Andy

As I remember, on the W210 this light should be off unless a child seat is installed in the pass side. The W210 does not have smart airbags that are only on if someone is in the pass seat. If this light stays on all the time there is most likely a fault in the sensor that tells if a child seat is installed. To the best of my knowledge there is no other way to disable the light or the airbag.

I too have the same problem with my 2000 W210, but it also causes the SRS warning light, and the airbag light to stay on.
My merc. dealer says the fault is caused by the child seat recognition sensor. Quote to replace $1,300., but will not disconnect the sensor.
I have tried a couple of independent auto elec's, but they will not disconnect either. Mutter something about liability in event of an accident.
Can anyone tell me, if the only function being interfered with is the installation of a child seat, or not?
It seems I can disable it myself, via facebook, but I don't want to interfere with another function, as I realise that the SRS light covers other functions.
One of the auto-elecs said even if I disconnect the seat sensor, the warning light would still stay on. Fact or fiction.
Can anyone help, please.

*****THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE AND IN NO WAY DIRECTIONS OR INSTRUCTIONS TO DO THIS ON YOUR OWN VEHICLE*****
I have a '97 E320 and I run an after market steering wheel that has no airbag, which triggered the "Air Bag" light in the cluster. There are two ways to remedy this, pull the bulb and but this method also disables the air bag system since there is still a fault but you just can't see the annoying light. The other method is to use a resistor on the disabled/removed airbag connector to fool the system into thinking one is still there. Method #2 keeps the rest of the system functioning once codes are cleared because it thinks it sees all the components still in place.
The resistor method would work on any SRS component as long as you run the correct OHM load that the system is looking for.

Here is how to replace the sensor yourself. You can install an $8 emulator to get rid of the error (not my choice as someone else may own the car after you) or do the repair properly and buy the replacement "mat" sensor for about $165 online.
