Oil question?

Oil question?
I have been reading all the topics about which oil should be used, or when should the oil be changed.
I need to add oil but not sure which oil to use synthetic or non synthetic. Do I even need to add oil? The marking is in the middle of min and max on the dip stick. How can I find out which oil was used. Not sure if it was serviced thru Mercedes or a local shop. I have read that if make any changes to the oil I may damage the seals. I do know it was serviced before I purchased the car.
1998 E320
Thanks

what ever is done, it's done... lets just make sure from here on out it's right... if you are between min & max, you're good...
here's some other info that should set you straight... if you have any other questions after just ask...
Note: MBUSA recommends only the use of MB approved synthetic motor oil for all vehicles equipped with the Flexible Service System (FSS) as of Model Year 1998. Conventional petroleum based oils are not recommended but may be used on older vehicles.
USA: approved engine oils for the latest engines
Engine oil choices
do it yourself oil change part 1
do it yourself oil change part 2
for me it’s Mobil1 full synthetic in all my cars, i recently purchased a Pela oil extractor pro14 and now the “do it myself” thing has never been easier… i swear, now i could change the oil in my suit… it’s just too easy..!!
hope this information helps..!!

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

according to the Mobil1 web site… mobil1.com
your '97 E420 8cyl. 4.2liter should use the Mobil1 0w-40…
its amazing how different stealerships use and do things so differently…
a friend had his (’97 E320) oil changed at the dealer and they used the oil that’s recommended for the diesel engine not the gasoline engine… forgot the difference in numbers… anyway, they told him it wouldn’t hurt the car but if he wanted, they would redo the job… he did..!!
i’m not sure about that G4 or G5 rating in the ACEA classification, i was under the impression they only had an “A” & “B” category…

What's the right oil for my car?
I went to Mobil 1 web site and put my car year and car model number and got following.
http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/....aspx?option=2
What's the right oil for my car?
Your vehicle has a specific recommendation
The company that manufactures your vehicle recommends this Mobil 1® product, or has a special requirement.
Current Vehicle:
Year: 1997
Make: Mercedes-Benz
Model: E420
Engine Type: 8cyl. 4.2Liter
Mobil 1 0W-40
A fully synthetic motor oil, Mobil 1 0W-40 with SuperSyn Technology exceeds industry standards and the major leading builder requirements, enabling the product to keep performing well after conventional oils cannot. Mobil 1 is recommended by leading car manufacturers as initial fill.
So, I am now going with Mobil 1 0W-40. This will be my first DIY oil job.
Any body know where to get right filter for oil change???

Go to the AMSOil web page. In addition to synthetic oil they sell high quality oil filters as well. If you were using 10W-30 conventional oil from the start and now are switching to synthetic oil, you can stay with the same weight but in a synthetic instead of a hydrocarbon base oil. I use 10W-30 AMSOil and a Haistings oil filter made in Germany.

Mann (oem) # A6002-15731…. around $8.50
Hengst (oem) # A6002-15731… $10.00
Bosch (oem) #A6000-65694… $12.00 prices will very from source and location but you'll have a working reference point now.
check your local auto parts, stealership or just order online from a bunch of sources… i found a deal on eBay for a lot of three for $20 delivered (i'm set for awhile). just search using the names and/or numbers of any above and you should find them.
