Mirror Replacement
Hi,
I'm looking for replacement mirrors for my 1998 E430
The passenger side mirror has a blue tint and bubbles and the drivers side somehow got a small crack in the upper corner and the mirror turned brown with a slilver strip running across the top. The lack of visibilty is killing me and at the speeds I drive that may happen. Also, the car is Dessert Silver can I just replace the inserts (mirrors) or do I need to replace the entire assembly.
And how much work is this? Pull the inside door panel and remove some screws or do I need a chainsaw and forklift? joke
I'm thinking getting replacements should not be too hard since I last used this forum I noticed alot of owners were installing the new mirrors with the turn signal indicator on the mirror so there should be a lot of old mirrors available. Speaking of this mirror is that a less expensive alternative getting the newer model mirrors with built-in signals? And if so who has the best price. Just looking at all my options and I want to do this cheap!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The blinker mirrors upgrades, for the most part, are done with simple swap
of the plastic mirror covers. They're not replacing the whole unit (motor,
mirror, heater, wiring, cover)....just the outside cover.

The mirror glass is replacable. This can be performed from the outside by pushing the mirror glass down. There is a spring wire on the top of the back of the mirror that must be unhooked. There may be double stick tape so the mirror won't just fall off after the wire is unhooked. You may have to pry the glass away from the holder by prying from the top. Unplug the connection to glass for the heater, etc. Plug in the new mirror glass, hook the mirror into the base plastic tabs, rehook the spring wire and you are done.

Sounds like an easy fix I will call the dealer and see what the mirrors will cost me.
Sincerely,
Steve

Just replaced my driver's side mirror using the tips provided by everyone on this website. It was much easier than I thought. This is the second successful, albeit minor repair I've made using the photos, videos and tips linked herein. Hopefully, I won't become overconfident now and try to rebuild the engine or something.
By the way, an OEM mirror was obtained through AutohausAZ.com for $225. (vs $400+ quoted everywhere else).

Contact either MyMercedesParts.com and speak to Bob Rox or call Autohaus German Auto Parts. Both will give a far better price than the 600$ or so the dealer will quote you for the glass driver side heated and auto dimming mirror.

ejsheltra is spot on. I was just quoted $675 for the driver's mirror glass by my dealer a couple of weeks ago. Same thing (OE they say) is about $330 at autohausaz.com.

I have the same issue with a yellowing driver side mirror on my 2002 e430. Is it simpler to remove the mirror casing (videos show it slides off after a couple of screws are removed)? It would seem to make the reattacment of the new mirror a lot easier unless I am missing something here. Thanks

Fritzdog, I had the same issue with my 02 e430. The simple and cheap fix for me was to just order the glass from any number of online sources. A quick Google search showed many people who sell just the glass. It comes with double-sided tape and just adheres to the existing glass. I did this and am pleased for the money. You can't tell the difference, but it obviously does not dim. Here is what a quick Google search brought up. (I can't remember who I bought mine from, but it was less than $20 shipped. Good luck

Bowyer,
Thanks for the fix.... I have already ordered the replacement mirror from eBay and was going the route of popping the old one out and replacing it with a newer clear one. Hence the question about the outside mirror casing....If that doesn’t work easily, I will perform the option you suggested. It does seem easy and reasonable! Again thanks

I feel it would be better to remove the mirror housing first prior to replacing the mirror glass.
It is possible that the mirror is attached via double stick tape, plastic snaps as well as a wire
retainer which is latched into place. Kind of a nice redundancy factor but if someone has
already replaced the mirror previously, the wire latch may have been discarded already.
There are two methods of attaching/releasing the mirror housing on 210s so be sure you
check Youtube and use the applicable method. If you bend the mirror housing towards
the door, you should be able to peer into the unit and determine the design used (when
compared with the YT videos. oh, 210 and 202s uses similar plastic housing designs

Mirror replacement
I would not recommend simply putting an aftermarket mirror over the existing mirror. The OEM mirror contains a liquid, which when it breaks down turns the mirror yellow or brown. It will eventually leak out and damage the paint. It is best to remove and replace it.

I have not been able to find the replacement rubber gasket for the driver’s side. There are 3 or 4 good videos on youtube about replacing and taking apart the entire mirror.
